Colonial Life 1638

Today:June 31 1638. I’m a tanner, whats a tanner? A tanner is a guy/girl that makes animal hides into leather. When a tanner received a hide the first thing he would do is put the owners initials on the hide to remember who’s hide was who’s. The tanners would soak the hides into a smelly lime mixture, the mixture is called vats or or more commonly tanning pits. Heavy hides like moose hides were soaked, stirred, washed, and moved from pit to pit. Black oak and hemlock trees have tan in their bark that is used to cure the leather and keep it from rotting. That’s all for today on your colonial life daily news.
